WHEN I JOINED THIS COUNCIL SEVEN YEARS AGO NOW, I HAD THE HONOR OF GETTING TO KNOW JEFF DURING THAT TIME.
HE HAS SERVED AS THE MAYOR PRO TEM FOR THE LAST SIX YEARS. HE HAS SERVED IN THAT POSITION WITH MULTIPLE COLLEAGUES, MULTIPLE MAYORS, AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN SOMEONE THAT WE CAN TURN TO, SOMEONE WHO DOES THEIR RESEARCH, SOMEONE WHO IS GROUNDED IN HIS OPINIONS, AND SOMEONE WHO IS ALWAYS DOING WHAT HE THINKS IS BEST FOR THE CITY OF WYLIE. NOT BEST FOR HIMSELF, NOT BEST FOR A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE, BUT FOR THE ENTIRE ELECTORATE THAT HE HAS BEEN PUT IN PLACE TO REPRESENT. HE HAS SPENT HOURS UPON HOURS UPON HOURS ATTENDING EVENTS, SUPPORTING NON-PROFITS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. AND YOU WOULD NOT KNOW A LOT OF IT UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN THERE AND SEEN HIM THERE, BECAUSE HE IS NOT SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO DO IT FOR SELF-PROMOTION. I CAN TELL YOU HE'S PROBABLY GOING TO GIVE ME A LECTURE LATER ABOUT SAYING THIS TONIGHT, BUT HE DESERVES THAT RECOGNITION AND THAT HONOR. YOU WILL FIND A DEPARTMENT THAT IS FORWARD THINKING THAT IS LEADING THE WAY WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS LIKE MENTAL HEALTH WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY, WHERE WE HAVE MENTAL HEALTH COORDINATORS, WE HAVE PLANS FOR FUTURE GROUPS AND UNITS WHO WILL TACKLE MENTAL HEALTH. SPECIFICALLY, WE HAVE A CRIME VICTIM ADVOCATE TO ASSIST THOSE WHO ARE THE UNFORTUNATE RECIPIENTS OF THE CRIMES THAT THEY ARE WORKING TO SOLVE AND TO STOP. SO WE NOW HAVE THREE STREETS THAT ARE THE MAIN CUT THROUGH STREETS, WHICH THIS IS WHERE THE SPEED CONCERN HAPPENS. I SENT OVER ILLUSTRATIONS TO THE COUNCIL EMAIL THAT LISTED OUT THE SAFETY CONCERNS THAT LISTED OUT LIVE OAK, ROSEMARY AND DAYLILY AS THOSE THREE STREETS.
OVER THE YEARS WE SENT REQUESTS AND COMPLAINTS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, THE CITY KIND OF MET US WITH BLOCKS AND NO SOLUTIONS. BUT WE WENT AHEAD AND FLOODED THE REQUEST. A FEW WEEKS AGO WE WERE MET WITH BLOCKS AGAIN, SO I ESCALATED IT TO THE COUNCIL EMAIL. SO FIRST LET ME SAY THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE INITIATIVE TO THIS MATTER, BECAUSE IT'S A GREAT FIRST STEP, BECAUSE YOU'VE FORWARDED IT TO THE CITY MANAGER AND PD CALLED ME TODAY THAT THEY PROVIDED THE TECHNOLOGY POSTED ON THOSE THREE STREETS TO START COLLECTING DATA OF THE SPEED THAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. SO JUST I KNOW YOU CAN'T ANSWER QUESTIONS, BUT I WANT TO KEEP IT TOP OF MIND.
YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS ONCE WE COLLECT THE DATA? WHAT'S NEXT? WE DON'T WANT TO TAKE PD AWAY FROM VERY SERIOUS MATTERS, BUT SPEED IS A SAFETY CONCERN IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. CAN WE DO IT? AND THE LACK OF THE FOUR WAY STOP OF DAILY AND LIVE OAK, THE RUNNERS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD HAVE IT HIT, HAVE BEEN HIT ALMOST DAILY ON A DAILY BASIS BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF THE FOUR WAY STOP. WE HAVE THE A AND B ACQUISITION AND IMPROVEMENT LAND DEVELOPMENT FEES, WHICH ARE COLLECTED WHEN A DEVELOPMENT COMES IN THAT IS ZONED MONEY. SO WHATEVER AREA THAT MONEY IS COLLECTED IN, THAT MONEY GOES BACK INTO THAT AREA. IT'S NOT USUALLY A LOT OF MONEY.
