[Municipal Walking Trails Artist/Community Input Meeting on October 29, 2024.]

[00:00:08]

SO WELCOME TO THE PUBLIC ART INPUT MEETING FOR THE CITIZENS AND FOR THE SELECTION PANEL AND FOR THE BOARD. I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE ONE OF OUR ARTISTS AND THE OTHER TWO ARTISTS ARE ARE STREAMING THE MEETING. SO THEY WILL BE HEARING EVERYTHING THAT YOU ALL SAY ABOUT THE ART AND WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO SEE. SO, SETH, CAN WE START WITH YOU AND HAVE YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU? SO MY NAME IS SETH VANDERBILT. I'M ACTUALLY A LOCAL ARTIST. I LIVE IN CEDAR HILL. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE METROPLEX, I'VE BEEN CREATING PUBLIC ART NOW FOR 35 YEARS. SPECIFICALLY, LARGE SCALE BRONZE FIGURATIVE WORK. EVEN PORTRAITURE. IF AND IF THAT HAPPENS TO BE SOMETHING THAT'S DESIRED, THAT COULD EVEN BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THIS NATIVE AMERICAN PIECE. WE COULD EVEN DO A PORTRAIT. BUT THAT'S KIND OF WHAT I SPECIALIZE IN VERY LARGE, MONUMENTAL PIECES. I HAVE PIECES EVEN IN THE METROPLEX, 3 OR 4 MONUMENTS IN SOUTH LAKE. AT LEAST FOUR IN ARLINGTON. BUT PIECES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. BUT I'M EXCITED TO BE A PART OF THIS AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING WHAT EVERYONE HAS IN MIND FOR YOUR PUBLIC PIECES HERE. THANK YOU.

OKAY, IF WE COULD JUST START WITH THE FIRST ROW AND EACH OF YOU COULD COME UP AND YOU'LL HAVE TO PUT THE MICROPHONE ON, SPEAK, AND THEN JUST TELL SETH AND THE OTHER ARTISTS THAT ARE LISTENING WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THE NATIVE AMERICAN HUNTER.

YES. MY NAME IS BARBARA MARX, AND I'M RELATIVELY NEW TO THIS. AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO EXPRESS TO YOU HOW I FEEL THAT THE NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE HAS NOT BEEN RESPECTED IN THIS COUNTRY, AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A VERY RESPECTFUL REPRESENTATION OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN HUNTER. IN DETAIL. WHEN YOU TALKED ABOUT DETAIL AT THE MEETING, AS FAR AS SYMMETRIX AND ANATOMICALLY CORRECT, THAT'S WHY I RULE OUT THAT ONE ARTIST, BECAUSE THE ANATOMY JUST WASN'T THERE. AND THAT WAS DRILLED INTO US WHEN I WENT TO SCHOOL MANY MOONS AGO. SO THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? IT WAS WEIRD TALKING TO MIKE WERE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER. NO. IF THERE ARE ANY. IF YOU'D LIKE TO ELABORATE AT ALL. I MEAN, I'M VERY INTERESTED IN YOUR PERSPECTIVE. AND WHEN YOU SAY RESPECTFUL, YOU MEAN AS FAR AS ACCURACY, OR ARE WE TALKING MODESTY? THE CLOTHING. I'M. I'M. NO. AND I WOULD LIKE IT TO BE AS HISTORICALLY ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE FROM THE TRIBES THAT WERE RESIDENT HERE IN COLLIN COUNTY. NOW I AM PART NATIVE AMERICAN, AND SO I'M SENSITIVE TO IT, BUT I HAVE NOT STUDIED THE CLOTHING, THE WEAPONRY OR ANY OF THOSE THINGS, AND I WOULD LIKE THAT TO BE INCLUDED SO THAT WHEN YOU WALK YOUR GRANDCHILDREN IN THE PARK, YOU CAN SAY, THIS IS ACCURATE. THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED HERE AND HUNTED HERE LOOKED LIKE. ABSOLUTELY. VERY GOOD. THANK YOU FOR THAT.

HI. I'M TAZ. WHEN WE WERE DELIBERATING AND WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE PIECES, THE DETAILS AND EVERYTHING, WE FOUND THAT WE ARE LOOKING INTO A BRONZE SCULPTING. VERY ACCURATE TO THE NATIVE AMERICAN, AS WE ARE PROPOSING. AND APART FROM THAT, LIKE MY FRIEND HERE SAID SOMETHING VERY, VERY AUTHENTIC, REAL TO ITS ORIGIN WOULD BE FANTASTIC. AND I THINK WHEN WE

[00:05:07]

SELECTED THE ARTIST BASED OFF THEIR SKILL SET, WE HAD THAT IN MIND AS WELL. SO I THINK WE HAVE SELECTED PRETTY GREAT NOMINATIONS FOR THIS, AND I'M EXCITED TO SEE WHAT YOU CAN COME UP WITH. THANK YOU.

HI. I'M THE PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR FOR THE CITY AND THE ARTWORK MOSTLY FALLS UNDER MY PURVIEW AFTER IT IS COMPLETED. SO THE MAINTENANCE IS CONCERN. I HAVE SO LOW MAINTENANCE AND CONSIDERING THAT I HAVE PARKS MAINTENANCE STAFF THAT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CARING FOR THE WORK, PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND. AND LIGHTING. I'D LIKE TO SEE LIGHTING INCORPORATED BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION WHERE IT IS ON THE TRAIL. WE DO HAVE SOME MINIMAL LIGHTING ON THE TRAIL, BUT NOT EXTENSIVE BECAUSE IT IS AN OPEN PRAIRIE SPACE. AND THEN ALSO CONSIDERING BECAUSE IT IS OPEN PRAIRIE TRAIL SPACE, THERE WILL BE CHILDREN TOUCHING THE STATUE AND GETTING UP REALLY CLOSE. SO JUST KIND OF KEEPING THAT SORT OF THING IN MIND. I THINK THERE'S ANYTHING ELSE I'D LIKE TO SECOND. I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE AN OPINION ON THAT, BUT CONSIDERING THE ARTWORK THAT'S ALREADY IN THE AREA AND THEN BEING RESPECTFUL AND MINDFUL OF THE TRIBES THAT WERE ACTUALLY HERE.

AT THIS POINT. HI, MY NAME IS SUSANNAH AND I AM ALSO A VISUAL ARTIST. AND ACTUALLY WHAT I AM THINKING ABOUT ART. ALL ART IS STORYTELLING, SOMETHING THE KIDS WILL BE ATTRACTED WITH. THE WHATEVER THE WE CHOOSE THE ARTIST RIGHT NOW. SO LIKE THE COMBINATION OF THE WHITE AND THE GOLDEN COLOR, IT'S A STORY TELLING SOMETHING. THE PERSPECTIVE AND THAT KIND OF ART. I WANTED TO SEE THIS ONE AND OBVIOUSLY THE NATIVE AMERICAN IS ONE OUR PROUD, THE NATIVE AMERICAN. RIGHT. SO IT'S MY OPINION. PERSPECTIVE IS THERE ALREADY. AND THE THAT WHATEVER THE STATUE WILL CREATE THAT IS SHOULD BE THE STORYTELLING THAT IS. YEAH. THANK.

HI. YEAH. MY NAME IS FADI AND I AM ONE OF THE PUBLIC ART ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER. MY SUGGESTION IS THAT RIGHT? IT COMES. IF ART IS THERE, IT HAS TO BE PART OF HISTORY. MAYBE SOME KIND OF WAR. OKAY. AND THERE SHOULD BE A PLAQUE WHERE YOU CAN WRITE AND TELL WHICH ERA AND WHAT EXACTLY THAT SYMBOLIZE, THAT THEY WON THAT WAR OR THEY LOST THAT WAR. IT SHOULD HAVE SOME HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND ALSO I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU TO GO TO A MUSEUM WHERE A LOT OF KIND OF WEAPONS WILL BE THERE. YOU PICK THE RIGHT WEAPON FOR THE HUNTER. OKAY. AND MAYBE THE GET UP. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS THAT CALLED? THEY SHOULD LOOK LIKE AUTHENTIC, AUTHENTIC, HISTORICAL. AND THERE SHOULD BE NAME OF THAT, WHATEVER IT IS. THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY. THANK YOU. AS SETH WAS TAKEN ON

[00:10:13]

A TOUR TODAY. SO HE HAS SEEN ALL OF THE PUBLIC ART IN THE CITY AND I HE'S SEEN THE SITE AND WE WALKED IT. HE HAD A COUPLE OF SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE WHITETAIL DEER AND THE HUNTER. AND WE GAINED SOME INFORMATION FROM THAT AS WELL. SO HE WILL BE GOING BACK TO HIS STUDIO AND ON NOVEMBER 18TH, HE WILL BE BRINGING HIS MAQUETTE TO PRESENT TO THE SELECTION PANEL AND THE PUBLIC ART BOARD. AND I THANK YOU FOR COMING, SETH. DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS? NO. THANK YOU FOR COMING AND SUPPORTING THIS PROJECT AND YOUR INPUT. CERTAINLY. ARE THERE OTHER ARTISTS ON THAT CAN ASK QUESTIONS? I DON'T WANT TO. I DON'T REPRESENT THE OTHER FINALISTS. JUST ME PERSONALLY, BUT YES. THERE THEY ARE. BOTH ONES OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND THE I THINK THEY'RE BOTH OUT OF THE COUNTRY. AND SO THEY WILL BE LISTENING TO THE STREAM AND LISTENING TO THE COMMENTS THAT ARE MADE, BUT THEY'RE NOT COMMENTING BACK. SO I MIGHT I MEAN, AGAIN, I'M NOT SPEAKING FOR THEM, BUT THE KIND OF QUESTIONS THAT WE WOULD PROBABLY ALL HAVE AS ARTISTS. FIRST OF ALL, I LOVE THE IDEA OF HAVING A PLAQUE AND BEING ABLE TO HAVE IT A VERY SPECIFIC NARRATIVE THAT KIND OF DESCRIBES WHAT'S HAPPENING OUT THERE. I THINK THE QUESTIONS THAT COME TO MY MIND THAT PROBABLY OTHER ARTISTS HAVE AS WELL, WOULD BE, I KNOW THERE'S A COMPANION PIECE WHICH IS A DEER. AND CAROL SHOWED ME YOUR ART COLLECTION, WHICH IS VERY IMPRESSIVE AROUND TOWN. AND IN TWO CASES YOU HAVE PARTNER PIECES BOTH AT BALL FIELDS. THE CATCH IS ONE THAT THE ARTISTS FROM COLORADO DID, AND THEN THE WHIMSICAL, WONDERFUL OCTOPUS THROWING THE BALL TO THE BATTING CATERPILLAR. SO THESE ARE BOTH PARTNER PIECES, KIND OF IN THE SAME VEIN. SO MY QUESTION IS ART IS, IS HOW CLOSE WHERE THE ACCEPTED PROJECT FOR THE DEER IS VERY ETHEREAL AND LITTLE MODERN TYPE ELEMENTS TO IT, WHERE AS, AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THE NATIVE AMERICAN PIECE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IS VERY DETAIL ORIENTED, VERY REPRESENTATIONAL AND TRADITIONAL. HOW HOW DOES THAT WORK? HOW CLOSELY DO YOU WANT THE TWO ARTISTS TO WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE SOME KIND OF A I DON'T KNOW, MAKE THEM COMPLEMENTARY? HOW COMPLEMENTARY DO YOU WANT THEM TO BE? ARE YOU OKAY WITH THEM BEING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STYLES? AND SO THAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING THAT WE AS ARTISTS WOULD WANT TO KNOW SPECIFICALLY. I THINK THE STYLES CAN BE DIFFERENT. THE DEER IS MORE CONTEMPORARY, FUTURISTIC, BUT I THINK THE CONNECTION WILL STILL BE THERE AS LONG AS THE TWO PIECES HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON, BUT NOT NECESSARILY MIRROR EACH OTHER. IF THAT MAKES SENSE, RIGHT? YEAH. AND IT WAS MENTIONED ABOUT LIGHTING AND THAT TYPE OF THING. ARTISTS ARE GOING TO BE VERY CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT WHAT'S AVAILABLE OUT ON THE SITE AS FAR AS IS THEIR POWER RUNNING OUT THERE. AND DO YOU HOW DO YOU HOW DOES THE CITY USUALLY LIGHT THINGS AROUND TOWN? DO YOU HAVE STAFF THAT DOES IT? IS THIS SOMETHING THAT YOU'RE THAT'S PART OF THE CONTRACT THAT ARTISTS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO, ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE OUT OF TOWN, THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE TO HIRE THEIR OWN CONTRACTORS. HOW IS THAT GOING TO WORK? SO WHAT WE, THE CITY DOES IS THEY STUB IT TO THE SITE SO THE SITE WILL BE FLAGGED AND WATER AND ELECTRICITY WILL BE PLUGGED TO THAT SITE. AND THEN IT'LL BE UP TO THE ARTIST TO INSTALL LIGHTING. AND THAT'S REALLY THEIR PURVIEW. WE WOULD LIKE LED LIGHTING. I THINK SOMETHING THAT'S LESS TAKES LESS WATTAGE, BUT SOMETHING THAT WILL SHOW OFF THE PIECE. SO TO SPEAK.

OKAY, BUT YOU'RE JUST GETTING AN ELECTRICIAN TO TAKE THAT STUB AND JUST INSTALL THE LIGHTING.

GOT IT. YEAH. AND THEN THE PARKS DEPARTMENT WILL TAKE CARE OF THE VEGETATION. THAT WILL GO AROUND THE PIECE. THE ARTISTS HAVE INPUT INTO WHAT THEY'D LIKE TO SEE. FOR INSTANCE, IF IT'S SOMETHING WHERE AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE LIFT, WHERE IT'S SOME OF THOSE PLANTS ARE GOING HIGHER

[00:15:02]

THAN THE ART PIECE, YOU WOULDN'T WANT THAT. SO YOU WOULD WANT TO GIVE SOME SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT WOULD WORK BEST WITH WITH YOUR ART PIECE. OKAY, FANTASTIC. WAS THAT ALL? THAT'S IT. AND JUST AS FAR AS THROUGH THE THREE TRIBES MENTIONED THAT WERE KIND OF OUTSTANDING IN THE AREA, THE WICHITA COMANCHE, WICHITA, AND CADDO. AND SO IS THERE ARE THERE PREFERENCES AS FAR AS THAT GOES? IS THERE A PARTICULAR FIGURE THAT STANDS OUT THAT WE ALL WOULD WANT A PORTRAIT OF? OR IS IT THAT ALL THAT LEFT UP TO THE ARTISTS? ANY OF YOU WANT TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION? WHICH IS PROBABLY THE HARDEST? YEAH, THE THREE, THE THREE TRIBES, IT CAN BE ONE OF THEM, OR IT CAN BE GENERIC. WHAT? SOMETIMES HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET TOO DETAILED ON ONE NATIVE AMERICAN NATION IS THE TRIBE. PEOPLE FROM THAT NATION MAY THINK, WELL, I DON'T THINK THAT. SO SOMETIMES IT'S BETTER TO BE A LITTLE GENERIC WITH IT. NOT DETAILED, BUT NOT FOR ANY ONE PARTICULAR TRIBE. SO I THINK THE ONES THAT COME UP AND MANAG. HELLO. SO YOU HAVE ASKED THE WHAT IS WHAT SHOULD BE THE RELATION BETWEEN THE DEER AND THE RIGHT. I WOULD BELIEVE THAT THE POSITIONING. RIGHT. WHETHER THE WHAT KIND OF WEAPON? THE WEAPON IS, IS USED FOR HUNTING. RIGHT. SO THE POSITIONING OF THE ARM. OR IS IT BOW OR ARROW? THAT IS ONE THING. AND THE SECOND THING IS THAT WHAT KIND OF ARTIFACTS ARE AVAILABLE AUTHENTIC WAY IN IN MUSEUMS PROBABLY. AND DEPENDING UPON YOU CAN PICK THE SPECIFIC TRIBE. THAT IS ONE SUGGESTION. SO MY GOAL IS THAT TO MAKE IT LOOK HISTORICAL, AUTHENTIC AND A LITTLE BIT REALISTIC IN POSITIONING OF A HUNTER AND ALSO I WOULD LIKE THE CITY TO PROVIDE HIM WHERE EXACTLY THIS IS. THIS IS GOING TO BE INSTALLED. I WOULD LIKE AFTER INSTALLED THE SURROUNDING SHOULD BE SUCH A WAY THAT LOT OF PEOPLE WILL BE VISITING THAT AREA, THAT IT MAY BE PARK WITH LOT OF FOUNTAIN, OR THERE MAY BE A SEATING AREA PLAYING AREA WHERE PEOPLE WILL BE VISITING PLACE. SO. THAT IS MY SUGGESTION. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. SO GETTING BACK ON THE NATIONALITIES OR THE LOOKS? I THINK THE RESEARCH THAT MAYBE A LOT OF THE PANEL IS TALKING ABOUT AND THE AUTHENTICITY IS, IS ABOUT THE, THE TRIBAL WEAR THAT THEY HAD WHEN THEY WENT OUT HUNTING. AND IT'S PROBABLY VERY SIMILAR IN ALL THREE NATIVE AMERICAN NATIONS. BUT YOU KNOW, YOU'RE YOU CAN'T GET AN EXACT BECAUSE EVERYONE LOOKS DIFFERENT. SO YEAH. OKAY. YEAH. ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU CAN THINK OF THAT YOU AS AN ARTIST NEED.

OKAY. AND THE CERTIFIED ENGINEERING PLANS HAVE TO BE FROM A TEXAS CERTIFIED ENGINEER.

SO YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT. BUT ANY OTHER STATEMENTS OR QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING? OKAY. WELL, THANK YOU FOR COMING AND HOPEFULLY WE'RE GOING TO GET SOME EXCITING MAQUETTES WHEN WE COME BACK
